Many Horned Adder – Bitis cornuta

Averaging 30-40cm reaching well over 60cm
Description:
An attractive dwarf adder with characteristic multiple “tufts” of horns above each eye. Typically dark grey, dark brown with lighter white, grey or light brown blotches or saddles down the back. Favouring dry arid habitats associated with rocky hill sides where it may shelter amongst rocks and rocky plains. These species has been known to be fairly arboreal seeking refuge in and amongst small low bushes. They will hiss loudly when encountered, highly prized by collectors for the illegal pet trade. A cytotoxic venom, which leads to extreme pain, severe swelling, and localised necrosis.
Anti-venom:
Anti-venom is not used or effective in the treatment of these bites.
